A Brief, Inspirational Visit with "teacherken"

by: cycle12

Fri Mar 26, 2010 at 06:51:50 AM EDT

Ken "teacherken" Bernstein is currently our houseguest here in Roanoke County while he's working as a volunteer this weekend for the Virginia Dental Association's "Mission of Mercy" free dental clinic at the Roanoke Civic Center; http://www.roanoke.com/news/ro... and, as usual, Ken's very busy and I doubt that we will have an opportunity to talk further.  However, our two-hour conversation yesterday evening served to help restore my hope for a better world - eventually - and here's why...

In October of last year - after having been a strong, determined and relentless advocate for Democratic principles and candidates for more than 30 years, and well before November's devastating political tsunami - I quietly informed various local Democrats that 2009 would be my final year of such intense political involvement, and I have stuck to that decision.

On the Sunday after Election Day, 2009, my wife and I hosted a "thank you" party here at our home for our several fine local Democratic candidates and their staunchest supporters.  I explained to that gathering of 30 or so individuals that it was time for the younger members of our local Party to take the reins and, as expected, they agreed to do so without hesitation.

Hope you have a good weekend...

RT-Turner v Griffith=David v Goliath?

by: cycle12

Sun Sep 20, 2009 at 04:04:56 AM EDT

Roanoke Times Metro section columnist Dan Casey hit the nail squarely on the head with his Sunday, September 20 newspaper article about Carter Turner's longshot campaign against the Republican's Majority Leader in the House of Delegates' 8th district.

Whether this "David vs Goliath", Democrat vs GOP, Turner vs Griffith story has a happy, victorious ending could depend upon how much support we can garner for Carter Turner's campaign within the next 45 days.

Please do all that you can to help Carter Turner beat Morgan Griffith on Election Day - Tuesday, November 3.

Thanks!

Salem Mayors Endorse Turner in the 8th HoD District!

by: cycle12

Sat Sep 19, 2009 at 06:45:09 AM EDT

( - promoted by KathyinBlacksburg)

In what is shaping up to be a potential major upset in the General Assembly's 8th House of Delegates district, currently controlled by Republican Majority Leader Morgan Griffith, Carter Turner; http://www.turnerfordelegate.com, has just received the endorsements of two former Salem mayors, Democrat Howard C. Packett and Republican Carl E. "Sonny" Tarpley:  http://www.roanoke.com/politic...

Turner got a late start in his campaign to upset the incumbent, but he was endorsed by Salem's current Mayor, Randy Foley, just three days after Turner announced his candidacy; http://www.roanoke.com/politic... and with TV spots now going up, Turner continues to build his momentum.

Please visit Carter Turner's website at http://www.turnerfordelegate.com and determine how best you can help his campaign unseat the House of Delegates Republican Majority Leader.

Thanks!

Silent Sadness; Ted Kennedy Gone

by: cycle12

Wed Aug 26, 2009 at 09:02:04 AM EDT

I was expecting to see various posts about Ted Kennedy's death here on BC and was surprised to find none at all thus far.

Are the rest of you as sad as me about Ted Kennedy's death?

I saw him a year ago at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, and he was still an amazing force with which to be reckoned.

Other thoughts and comments, please?

Goodbye, Teddy...

Thanks.

Advertisers Abandoning Fox's Beck

by: cycle12

Ladies and gentlemen, the outright abandonment by advertisers of talk show hosts like Fox's Glenn Beck - http://tv.yahoo.com/news/artic... - is precisely how Rush Limbaugh and his ilk can be correctly handled.

Recently, Fox talk show host Glenn Beck called President Obama a racist, and now big name advertisers such as Walmart and Clorox want to have nothing to do with him or his show.

According to the news article available at the link above, here's how Beck's comments were first brought into the public arena:

Webb Secures Yettaw's Release

by: cycle12

( - promoted by KathyinBlacksburg)

Read all about U. S. Senator Jim Webb's success at achieving the release of American John Yettaw in this news release just received from Webb's Communications Director, Jessica Smith:

"Sunday, August 16-U.S. Senator Jim Webb has finished up a two-day visit to Myanmar by obtaining the release of American prisoner John Yettaw and meeting with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.  Webb, who on Saturday became the first American leader ever to meet with Myanmar President Than Shwe, raised both issues during his meeting.  He also requested that the country's leadership release Suu Kyi from her eighteen month sentence of house arrest following her recent conviction for violating the terms of her house arrest."

Webb Goes to Myanmar!

by: cycle12

Fri Aug 14, 2009 at 09:35:22 AM EDT

One of the very best members of the United States Senate, our own Jim Webb of Virginia, is now on an official mission to southeast Asia according to this Reuters News article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200...

As most of us know, Jim Webb speaks Vietnamese quite well and has made many trips back to southeast Asia since his service there during the Vietnam War.

I can think of no better representative of U. S. interests in that region of the world than Jim Webb.

Thanks for your continued exemplary service, Senator Webb!

TURNER for Delegate!

by: cycle12

Mon Jul 27, 2009 at 16:26:10 PM EDT

( - promoted by kindler)

Good afternoon, everyone!  I'm extremely proud to report that, earlier today (Monday, July 27), Carter Turner announced his Democratic candidacy for the 8th House of Delegates district seat that includes all of the City of Salem and much of Roanoke County.

Ginny Weisz announced her Democratic candidacy for this same seat last month, but later determined that her dedication to rural health care and the need to complete her doctoral studies would not allow her to campaign effectively for this important elected office.

Senator Palin?

by: cycle12

Sun Jul 05, 2009 at 09:18:37 AM EDT

In this July 5 article by Bearing Drift's Brian Kirwn:

http://bearingdrift.com/2009/0...

...he speculates that Sarah Palin may be abandoning her current office as Alaska's governor later this month in order to prepare to run against moderate Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski next year.

This certainly sounds logical and plausible, but do those words necessarily apply to Sarah Palin?

Please stay tuned... thanks!

This is too good to be true, but it must be...

In this breaking news story:

http://www.comcast.net/article...

...it is being reported that Sarah Palin is abruptly leaving her post as Alaska's Governor before the end of this month, presumably to begin preparing to run as the Republican nominee for President in 2012.

Please let it be true...

"Mike" for Memorial Day

by: cycle12

Mon May 25, 2009 at 09:05:34 AM EDT

(Sorry I did not get to this earlier. I spent part of today sitting Shiva with my aunt.  My Uncle Bob who served in Europe during WWII passed on Tuesday.  Feel free, even though it is now evening, to add memories of veterans you remember this day. - promoted by teacherken)

My first cousin, Mike Stiglich, was killed in Vietnam at the age of 23 nearly 40 years ago, and I am especially reminded of him on Memorial Day each year.

Several years ago, I wrote an account of my memories of Mike and, last year, Hank Bostwick of the Star City Harbinger was kind enough to enhance and then publish it on his blog.

This year, with further updates including photos of my cousin, Hank has again posted "Mike" on SCH at this link:
http://starcityharbinger.com/?...

Please remember the importance and significance of this holiday.

Thanks.

Devolvement, again...

by: cycle12

Thu May 07, 2009 at 16:29:45 PM EDT

Well, here we go again, having arrived at a point just about a month before this year's Democratic gubernatorial primary decision on June 9 where some of us have devolved into negative attacks on one or two of our three fine candidates and, occasionally, upon one another.

Have we not yet learned - and do we still not understand - that the slings and arrows used against one of our own become weapons to be employed against our eventual candidate by our real opponents?

It seems to happen every year, and I'm not necessarily surprised by this apparently inevitable devolvement, but I'm always disappointed by it...

No, thanks.

Good News - Pratt Running for 6th HOD Seat!

by: cycle12

Tue May 05, 2009 at 16:22:51 PM EDT

Way back in 1991, when Roanoke County Sheriff Gerald Holt and I first ran for our respective offices, one of the other Democratic candidates from our area who most impressed us was Pulaski dentist Carole Pratt, who ran a strong campaign for state senate that same year.

Well, at the young age of 57, Carole's now retired from dentistry and has just announced that she is running for the Virginia General Assembly's 6th HOD district seat, as explained in the Roanoke Times newspaper article available at this link:
http://www.roanoke.com/politic...

I spoke briefly with Carole this past Wednesday evening prior to the Democratic gubernatorial debate at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg.  I can assure everyone that she is an intelligent, capable and well-spoken candidate who will make an excellent Delegate, and she's ready to run.

To that, I can only add these comments...

WOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

...and thanks!
