It is fascinating to me that a conservative state Delegate from Fairfax can so quickly be transformed into a national figure by benefiting from a lackluster Democratic year in Virginia, and some well-timed crazy as he starts out his term as our Attorney General.
Looking at what AG Cuccinelli has been doing since coming into office, it seems he is far more concerned with national / Federal issues than state issues. In fact, seen from a certain angle, I would say that Ken Cuccinelli is setting himself up to run for Senate against Jim Webb in 2012.

I have a friend on the west coast who I enjoy debating politically, over Facebook. He takes umbrage at the possibility of a publicly funded and sponsored health insurance option that could compete within the private market, but have the weight and benefit of the government behind it. In his opinion, such an option in the market would crowd out private offerings, since who in their right mind (no pun intended) would pick a private option when a public option is available.
Leaving aside for the moment the question of whether private options in the marketplace have a right to exist without competition from public options, let's examine the fundamental criticism - The existence of a public option will crowd out private options.
The experience of the American economy proves the lie of this criticism. There are many examples of public options co-existing with, and competing with, private products and services. In most of these markets, the existence of the public option actually provides incentives for the private providers to do more and better. Follow me below the fold for the examples.

Bob McDonnell has found his "No Car Tax" pledge - privatize ABC stores to pay for road improvements.Robert F. McDonnell, the Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, proposed Tuesday handing over about 330 state-run liquor stores to private operators to pay for road improvements -- a novel way to fund fixes but one that confronts many of the same obstacles that have stalled previous efforts. - The Washington Post It's a beautiful idea from a framing perspective. It's pro-business and anti-government. It is clearly designed to attract Virginia's business conservatives who are somewhat skeptical of Bob McDonnell as the arch social conservative candidate. It appears to address the key issue in Northern Virginia - roads and traffic. And it forces the Deeds campaign to react, rather than act, on the roads issue in the campaign.

As usual, Digby has probably the best coverage of the unethical and illegal actions taken by health insurers in the name of that extra dollar of profit. In this case, testimony by a former Cigna Vice President about the policies and procedures used to drive those who actually use health insurance to cover health expenses off of the insurance rolls.
We need a strong public option, not a co-op or any other watered down compromise. A strong public option will cause the health insurance market to compete on outcomes and coverage, not lack of those things.
This is why progressive organizations are asking for us to call our Senators and keep them focused on a public option, not any kind of alternative compromise.
Can you call Sens. Warner and Webb? Tell them that anything other than a strong public health insurance option is unacceptable-including the weak co-op proposal.

I just made my first campaign contribution of 2009. It may surprise some people that I haven't given yet this year. I have been active, canvassing for Sen. Deeds in the final week, and speaking on behalf of Steve Shannon in two cases. This morning, however, I gave what I could today - $10 - to Steve Shannon's campaign for Attorney General.
Now that we have our ticket, it is likely that the Deeds campaign will be receiving the lion's share of attention and contributions. And we all know that early money is worth a lot more than late money. Given those two factors, I decided to give my early general election money to our candidate for Attorney General.

I was up this morning preparing 2 precincts for primary day. My precinct (E. Leesburg) and Smarts Mill have their polling places in schools next door to each other, so around 5:30 this morning, I headed over to setup candidate signs (Moran and Deeds, the McAuliffe campaign didn't get signs to us to put up) and the "Vote-o-matic." The Vote-o-matic is a small table that our District Chair has prepared with weights to hold it in place and bungee cords to secure literature on top of. Though we are not staffing every precinct on Primary Day, Leesburg Democrats are making every candidate's literature available on a table at each precinct.
It was interesting to see that Bob McDonnell already had signs up at each polling place in spite of the fact that there is no Republican primary. It's not entirely clear whom these signs were directed at - presumably it is committed Democrats who will be showing up at these polling places today. Perhaps Mr. McDonnell has (RNC and other national Republican) money to waste on signs that don't vote in an election he's not running in.

Well, leave it to Lowell to report the interesting. Frank Wolf's fundraising has been anemic at best, retirement-worthy even.I was checking the FEC disclosure database and was utterly amazed at Rep. Frank Wolf's fundraising in the first quarter of 2009. Not "amazed" because it was so high, but "amazed" because it was so low. How low is low? We're talking just $5,203 in total receipts for 1Q09. With disbursements of $21,078 and a starting balance of $56,113, that leaves Rep. Wolf (R-10) with just $40,238 cash on hand - and falling fast. - Blue Virginia Money is a good indicator of intentions. So are actions - or lack thereof. And Frank Wolf has not been very active lately.
Frank Wolf has never been an official to miss a photo op. When the stimulus bill passed Congress and was signed by the President, it was the perfect opportunity for Rep. Wolf to take some undeserved credit. In the bill (which Rep. Wolf voted against, along with every other Republican) was money for our own Loudoun Community Health Center. In previous years, you can bet Rep. Wolf would have set himself at the steps of Cornwall and taken some well set photos. This year, that didn't happen.

It is with sadness that I return from tonight's Loudoun County Democratic Committee meeting and report that at this evening's meeting Mike Turner, the Democrat running for Delegate in the 33rd District, withdrew from the race against Del. Joe May. He cited two reasons for ending his campaign. First, he cited the commitments he has made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Mike is leading the advocacy for wounded veterans of the past eight years before Congress. Our loss of a candidate is a win for our thousands of wounded warriors. I can think of no better advocate for our wounded soldiers, and if we are to lose Mike as a candidate, I can think of no better organization to receive his dedication and focus.
