Last Thursday, Republican Delegate Bob Marshall made this unconscionable statement during a press conference:
The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children. In the Old Testament, the firstborn of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There's a special punishment Christians would suggest...
Delegate Marshall's radical statement was hideous. Unfortunately, opinions like his are all too common among polarizing politicians. They - and their comments - have no place in our political discourse. Bob Marshall should immediately resign from public office. At the very least, all Virginia politicians should join me in censuring his remarks.
The best elected leaders build real solutions to our Nation's immense challenges. They fiercely and wholeheartedly defend their positions while ultimately remaining respectful of their fellow citizens.
This is the path I will travel when elected to Congress. Hateful speech has no place in our political discourse, no matter what side of the aisle you sit on.
