Long Live Blue Virginia!

by: Dave

Fri Apr 02, 2010 at 13:58:46 PM EDT

UPDATE, 4/18: All commenting, posting, and new user registration has been disabled.

As many of you may have noticed in the last few weeks, the editors of Blue Commonwealth have been double-posting between BC and Blue Virginia. That's because... we're moving!

Now that Blue Virginia is back to a community format (in the spirit of the old Raising Kaine), we all figure that both communities are best served by merging. It will mean more opinions, more commentary, more ideas, and in general a more vibrant and active community.

So what does this means practically?
1) Blue Commonwealth will be turning off comments and new posts on April 18th.
2) Everyone reading this, if they haven't already should head over to Blue Virginia, http://www.bluevirginia.us and register for an account.
3) Readers, posters, and commentors at BC should start "transferring" their participation over to Blue Virginia.

Lest you be worried about editorial input, policies, etc, fear not! The entire board of BC is now on the board of BV where their talent can be combined with the likes of Lowell and Miles. Everyone here is happy about the move, and we hope you will be too.

So say goodbye to Blue Commonwealth, and say hello to Blue Virginia. Long live Blue Virginia!

Hilarious
This is really quite funny, all things considered with the closing of RK and launch of BC and Blue Virginia.

Well, that wasn't the anticipated response.
Just for the record, it's April 2nd, not 1st.

This is no joke. Blue Commonwealth is merging with Blue Virginia at the end of the month.

Awesome
I, for one, am thrilled and glad for it. There's been a gap since RK went dark.

Maybe "BlueCommonwealth" could be kept around as a URL for community activism/action where BlueVirginia is more news?

Great move guys!

Call me a skeptic
but I've heard the line "we're merging to better suit you," way too many times, mostly from banks, not that people are heartless greedy bas----,wanting to take my money, but I'll believe it when I read it.

Gee, Aren't We Cynical?
Believe me, Blue Commonwealth is not a capitalist enterprise that exists to make a profit for shareholders...Your analogy can't stand the light of basic reason.

Perhaps you made your comment as a day-late April Fool's joke.

Anyone who thinks there's serious $$$
to be made in blogging, I'd love to talk to them and find out how! Ha. :)

[ Parent ]
Geez...
Can't even do volunteer work (at a blog which has criticized Wall Street excesses and repeatedly begged our reps to do something about it) without being linked to rich Wall St. execs?

"One person, one vote" died at the hands of SCOTUS, January 21, 2010

And I might add,
the comparison is really a stretch...

"One person, one vote" died at the hands of SCOTUS, January 21, 2010

[ Parent ]
Well not really
I guess my experience is with banks, but its when two enterprises merge, its usually done not for the consumer but for the people doing the deal. I think my comparison can stand, the"light of basic reason." Before Rupert Murdoch swallowed it up the Wall Street Journal was one of the best papers around. Then Murdoch came along and the paper is now trash.  Before the NYTimes which is in love with its own self, took it over the Boston Globe was a good paper run by a good family.  I would suggest BlueCommonwealth is more like the Washington Post. RaisingKaine is the Katherine Graham, Woodstein era,Bluecommonwealth is more Donald Graham. Which is why its going under, like chipping away sections like BookWorld, Business . Which is why Blue Commonwealth is merging with a Lowell Feld publication.  Like Trying to rebottle LateNight after kicking Jay out, moving Conan up and then giving Jimmy Fallon a show.  Whoops, that didn't work, kick Conan out, leave Fallon where he is, and put Jay back to where he was, oh and smile and try not to look like anything just happened.  Kind of ironic how the thread is about new media and I was able to make the point with old media.  All the news that fit to print.

Just an example, and helpful guideline for your deadlines
of how bad this blog was. And I don't want to limit this to this site, because I think its true of the larger world wide web, was the blog roll.  Lots of links still there, to blogs that people retired from blogging on, and moved on with their life. These were never updated in a timely manner.  Again, with old media, because of the success of blogs, newspapers have had to fire lots of "unnecessary" workers like editors.  This has had a vicious cycle of feeding the demise onto itself, because papers like the Washington Post keep getting letters from people who have caught grammatical errors, giving the paper a sloppiness to it. The last letter to the editor I read was in reference to a Tom Shales column.  Would BlueCommonwealth be biting the dust like it is now, had they checked, rechecked, and then checked again, which blogs were active, by maybe having "staff favorites" rather than a 52 card pickup, its possible. Only a minor flaw, but a little goes a long way,as the saying goes. The big question is who's the senior partner here and did they do a hostile takeover?

[ Parent ]
Or, Are You Just Hostile...
Just asking. Are you just a mite too hostile yourself to make an unbiased judgment about anything? Watch out...your biases are showing...

[ Parent ]
I wasn't the one who cast judgement
You were the one to say and present a challenge
Your analogy can't stand the light of basic reason.

Perhaps you made your comment as a day-late April Fool's joke.

so, I called your bluff and gave examples of what happens when entities merge, and I used the medium of the blog, journalism to illustrate my point. Then I cited how newspapers and blogs have similar rules, and that a decline in quality happens when people do such and such. The dye however, had already been cast as a merge, when I made my comments. I did not say-let's merge, other people did.

Also. I think my criticism is rather constructive. An editor's picks shows people are going out of their way to to say here's why you should read BlueCommonwealth, because we have editors that love their job and are dedicated to serving you quality reporting. What is hostile about that?  That's the main outline any business is founded by.  I work at a grocery store, sometimes a manager or another higher up co-worker, will say, "Brian could you get a mop on aisle 3" or "Brian, could you check the ladies bathroom". So I clean the bathroom and I clean the aisle in question. So that the paying customer will want to come back and buy from us because they have people there that go out of their way to make sure its clean, germ free, and have quality standards so the person doesn't step in filth.  I worked at a Home Depot, and it now has birds living in it. Magruders, went down hill because they allowed animals to populate the store.  But to each their own, if you enjoy Yellow Journalism , and people not caring how readers look at them, then maybe you're the type of person who enjoys buying damaged fruit, and past due milk.  More power to ya.

I do wonder why you attack my post, but say you're right , to cycle12?  He basically said the same thing, that I'm say, only in a more condensed version.   Paradox13 also took aim at the decline in quality, post RaisingKaine. Are you attacking him too?  Or is that caustic wit when you say "thanks yourself?"

Balance
Good move; to be successful, a blog must maintain a reasonable balance between the posting of news articles, editorials and reports and the opinions of its readers/writers.

This merger should return us to the former obvious successes of "Raising Kaine."

Thanks!

Steve

Thanks, Yourself
I hope you will cast a diary or two over to Blue Virginia, Steve. Especially as 2012 is coming up before we know it.

[ Parent ]
2012
Agreed, Elaine, and unless you are addressing that rapidly approaching year as being the latest of many "end time" prediction discussion items, more importantly it is the year that both Barack Obama and Jim Webb will be running for re-election.

Thanks (again)!

Steve

[ Parent ]
Yes. And Both Will Be Re-elected
Both men are some of the best to run for office in a very long time. I look forward to the second term of President Obama and the second term - of many - for Jim Webb.

(How he has grown in the job. I remember the fellow who was more of a writer than a political leader when I first met him in the 2006 campaign. Now, there he is...a statesman with real legislative credits, yet still a writer and soldier first. One of the real "public servants" we have today.)

[ Parent ]
Great job to the team that took the helm
during the transition from RK to Blue commonwealth.....

but I am so excited that the best of the best are coming back together.  I truly believed it made a huge differece in 2009 - not on purpose - there was a disconnect with our VA blogging community.

Yea - on the merger - time to stay strong in 2010 and beyond.

Thanks again.

this is great news!
That is all.

dailykos
Is there a reason that blue commonwealth is off the Daily Kos Blogroll?  (Blue Virginia isn't there either).  Did someone piss off Markos?

Keeping it Tight
Markos claims he's intentionally stripped down the blogroll to "essential" elements and won't be including Virginia on it this year. Shrug.
