| First of all, Flag Day is June 14, not July 3. Flag Day has been celebrated on June 14 for the last 120 years, long before Del. Hugo came along. So Hugo needs to consult a calendar before he starts declaring his own holidays.
But much more importantly, Hugo needs to learn what the Flag stands for. It stands for the ideals of our nation, including Freedom of Speech. Hugo needs to learn that Freedom of Speech includes the right to decide for yourself what you want to say, AND the right not to say something.
It includes the right to decide for yourself if you want to display the Flag, and if you do want to display the flag to do so where and when you want.
It is extremely disrespectful to the Flag and to the basic principles of our nation for an elected official to tell a neighborhood that they must display the Flag. I own several flags, and I fly them on occaisions that I choose. Not when Hugo tells me to.
Hugo also needs to learn that our Flag is not a symbol of his political party. He has no right to place his symbol on people's private property without permission.
Hugo says the flags "give the neighborhoods a festive appearance." The American military men and women who fought and died for our country did not do so because they wanted my neighborhood to look festive. The Flag deserves more respect than Hugo is giving it. |
