BREAKING: Top Iranian Cleric Group Summoned for Meeting.

by: KathyinBlacksburg

Wed Jun 17, 2009 at 13:07:35 PM EDT

Huffington Post headlines that the top clerical group in Iran has been summoned for a meeting.  It is believed this may be the beginning of the end for the Ayatollah Khamenei's leadership.

Nico Pitney of Huffington Post is live-blogging the electoral aftermath in Iran.  Pitney reports that Khamenei hasn't seemed fully engaged and has just begun to appear in public.  Read more from Nico here

Stay tuned for more updates from Huffington Post at their front page here.  Meanwhile, MSNBC reports to be conducting further crackdowns on bloggers.  See their report here.

The Assembly of Experts
probably wont dismiss Khamenei, but I expect they'll put some behind the scenes pressure on him. Then again, Rafsanjani may be still bitter that Khamenei fixed the 2005 Election against him and for Ahmadienjad.

"One person, one vote" died at the hands of SCOTUS, January 21, 2010

I always have
trouble accessing HuffPo -- it seems to freeze my Firefox almost every time; the only website which does it regularly -- so I stay away from it. But NYTimes' "The Lede" has very good and up-to-date coverage, well worth following:

If you scroll down to 1:06 pm, you'll see the rumour about the gathering of the Assembly of Experts. You'll also see the rumour that Rafsanjani (spell?) has resigned from that same Assembly and would not have any influence. Another swirling rumour is that he's in Qom, looking to see whether he has enough clerics supporting his bid against Khamenei.... None of the rumours are confirmed, so far.

That site
is very busy, deep with layers of content.  And it does load slower than most.  Sometimes I avoid it when I am in a hurry.  But it's a great site and I often miss something if I don't check in there.
