| David W. Marsden, Democrat, who just won re-election to the position of Delegate in the 41st House District, has made it official: he is running for the 37th Senate District seat vacated by Republican Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, who won the slot of Commonwealth's Attorney General in the recent November election. The election will be Tuesday 12 January 2010.
Marsden has hit the ground running. Much of his staff is already in place, and he has lined up two field offices already to cover the sprawling 37th District, which runs diagonally across Fairfax County from West Springfield northwest through Chantilly and Centreville to the edge of Manassas Battlefield, but is basically centered in Burke with US Route 50 as its northern boundary and Clifton on its southern. Many residents of the 37th Senate District know Dave and have already voted for him, since 10 of the 14 precincts of the Senate 37th District are in both the 37th and his House 41st Districts, and about 30 percent of the residents of the Senate District are also in his House District. Marsden has served in the Assembly for four years as the Delegate from Burke, that is, the 41st District. In the 2009 Republican landslide, Dave won with 49.66 percent of the vote, beating Republican Kerry Bolognese (48.66 percent) and Independent Green C. Monique Berry (3.49 percent).

Marsden sees the economy and jobs as a major issue, and plans to encourage job formation through creating new businesses by beefing up the Governor's Opportunity Fund (which, by the way incoming Republican Governor Bob McDonnell voted against). Small businesses are struggling across Virginia and need help just to survive and not cut employees. Says Marsden,
"Look, this is a serious time and we have got to stop messing around. We are going to have to cut another $3 Billion from the state budget, and I am going to do my best to make sure that Fairfax County gets its fair share of revenue from Richmond..... it's time we started to look out for ourselves more."
He also believes that controlling pollution and runoff under new federal initiatives will help to clean up the Bay and revive the hundreds of jobs of the historic Watermen of the Chesapeake.
When it comes to transportation, Dave is brisk and emphatic:
"People here are just fed up. They're tired of the fact that state government can't get its act together to provide any real traffic relief.... If the folks in Richmond who were responsible for funding roads and providing mass transit had our commutes, this problem would have been addressed long ago. People are tired of lip service, and so am I"
His web site is up at marsdenfordelegate.com. You can volunteer to help his campaign by calling 571-249-3037, and contributions should be addressed to "Marsden for Senate" at PO Box 10889, Burke, VA 22009.
Marsden believes he has proved that he can work across the aisle in bipartisan fashion with the incoming Republican administration since he served as Chief Deputy and Acting Director of the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice under both Republican Governor Jim Gilmore and Democratic Governor Mark Warner. He and his wife Julia live in Burke, where they raised their three children Nathan, Stuart, and Connor. |
