Obama Organizer to Run for School Board

FALLS CHURCH -Local community activist and former school teacher in Fairfax County Herb Smith has announced his candidacy for Mason District School Board.  Inspired by President Obama, Smith plans to create the same type of enthusiasm in Fairfax County residents as Obama did nationwide, regarding an improved public school system.  The seat is currently held by Kaye Kory, who was recently elected to the House of Delegates in the 38th District.

"Education has to be one of the main focuses in Fairfax County," Smith said.  "We have an exceptional school system and must continue to maintain that image by keeping our high standards.  We must not let our children down when it comes to the value of an education, regardless of the economy.  Fairfax County Public Schools should always be known as being the best all around, and that's what I plan to focus on by adapting our school system to its diverse community and a new way of thinking during tough times."

Herb Smith is a proud product of public education.  He worked as a Special Education teacher in Maryland and Virginia before being inspired to get involved politically as a Field Organizer with Falls Church for Obama.  During the 2009 elections, he worked as Field Director for a local delegate campaign and continued talking to residents about ways to improve the school system. While in this position, Smith also found ways to help high school students earn experience by creating internship programs within the campaign.  He plans to continue to show the importance of involving students in the community by inspiring them to volunteer.

Smith believes that we are at a critical turning point for the future of Fairfax County Schools, where we must choose either to give our students and teachers the resources they need or to take a step backwards by cutting crucial programs and services.  "During financially difficult times, the last thing we want to do is take funding from our school systems" Smith added.  "Our schools are an important component of our quality of life here in Fairfax County.  They attract new residents and businesses into the community."
