Obama to Campaign for Deeds in Virginia

by: Teddy Goodson

Fri Oct 16, 2009 at 19:37:30 PM EDT

The Deeds campaign has confirmed that President Obama will return to Virginia to campaign for Deeds on Tuesday, 27 October.  This should "put to rest" rumors that the President was distancing himself from Deeds, and should inspire the Democratic core constituency including African Americans just before the election.  Details will follow http://voices.washingtonpost.c...

Do you suppose
that it might even occur to Doug Wilder that it would reflect favorably on himself if he joined his President on the platform in support of Deeds? Ha. What has been missing in this campaign is an inspired Democratic base, especially among African Americans. If they turn out, and also a reasonable number of the new Obama voters, that changes the entire universe of likely voters.

Everybody
is campaigning for Deeds, seems like. Gore, Clinton/McAuliffe (I hope it does more good than bad), now Obama... But, like Teddy says: it'll all depend on the turnout. "Get me to the polls on time"

Good fight song
"Get me to the polls on time"---- there's some good material in that song, and the voting booth really is the chapel of our democracy. Suggest you do a verse or two for us to use (is it still under copyright?)

Probably,
(still under copyright) since it was written in 1956. Isn't US copyright something like 70 or 75 yrs? Don't know who holds the copyright on the music (the lyrics would be different than in the original), or how to find out.

It's an intriguing idea, though, and I've been scribblin' like mad, just for the heck of it :) If I ever manage to cobble something together (you have to remember that English is not my first language), I'll post it as a diary, OK?

Location, time, tickets ?
Anyone on BC from the Deeds campaign have any info. yet ?

Copyright
As long as you don't use it to make money, you should be okay, I would think.

lyrics
Aren't parodies protected?

We're voting for Creigh Deeds on Tuesday,
Whether it rains or if it shines.
Nothing can stop us.
We'll cause a ruckus.
Just get us to the polls on time.

We understand if you are tired.
It's true we're going through tough times.
We want to be winners
Not obsessed with sinners.
Just get us to the polls on time.

McDonnell scares us.
He should scare you.
Deeds will support us,
men and women, too.

Come join our noble cause on Tuesday.
You'll leave the booth just feeling fine,
Knowing you chose a
friend of Virginia.
Just get us to the polls on time.

Maybe you should re-post as a diary.
And we can FP it closer to election day!

Other parodies welcome!

just take it
I hereby relinquish all rights to the lyrics I posted above.  Edit and use freely to your heart's content.

Actually, I have an edit and a suggestion.

1) I'd swap "some" for "to be" in the third line of the second verse.  It's embarrassingly one syllable too long.

2) I suggest a song like this to be sung in rowdy happy groups like a bar song or a school fight song.  If Deeds is gonna win, he'll have to recapture some of the magic of last November.  How great would it be (with or without a song like this) to organize voting parties?  Groups of people could meet together at their local polling places, link arms, and loudly proclaim their support for Deeds, encouraging others who happen to be there to join up.

It's called Happy Hour!

[ Parent ]
Hey, Ingrid
Please get your guitar and put this song up on YouTube for all us folks who can't sing as you do! (With "some" replacing "to be" in verse two, as suggested by the author). I'd love to hear it done with vigah!

I don't know the music
Can you point me to the original?  Title?  Youtube link?

[ Parent ]
Thanks.
Didn't realize it was based on this song.

[ Parent ]
So, OK,
Since JS Rutstein beat me to it, I won't post it as a separate diary. Here are some more verses, though without that little bit in the middle; I just wasn't able to get that right. Otherwise, same "rules" as JS': use it, edit it, anyway you want to.

I'll go and vote on Tuesday morning
I'm sure to be there, rain or shine.
I will remember
This third of November
To show up at the polls on time.

I'll go and vote on Tuesday morning
Why don't you join me, friend of mine.
Our choices are clear
So please be a dear
And join me at the polls this time.

We'll go and vote on Tuesday morning
To stay at home would be a crime.
Don't try to stop us
You cannot GOP* us
From getting to the polls on time.

Let's fight for Dems on Tuesday morning
And in the last bit of the rhyme
Let's sing a canon
Of Deeds, Wagner, Shannon
And let's get to the polls on time.

*GOP -- v.tr. "to obstruct"

We are the McDonnell family
(With apologies to Sister Sledge)

We are family
No working women with me
We are family
Gay people get up and leave

We are family
No atheists with me
We are family
Fornicaters get up and leave

We are family
Real Virginians with me
We are family
Non citizens get up and leave

(This song can be sung after Happy Hour drinks take effect)

Except
Except that his mother, wife, daughters, campaign managers, and co-workers are working women, right?

[ Parent ]
I'll change the second line to
Working women are a determent to society

It does hurt the rhythm of the song, but I'm quoting the thesis

[ Parent ]
detriment
Spelling was my worst subject in school
